Sporting Clube de Portugal announced on their official website on Monday that head coach Rui Borges has been sacked.
According to Sporting Clube de Portugal’s official statement, negotiations regarding the termination of Borges' contract took place on Sunday (November 1). In the interim, before a new head coach is appointed, B-team head coach Tiago Fernandes will take charge of the first team.
Fernandes’ first challenge will be leading the side in this week’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Meanwhile, reports from CNN Portugal indicate that the relationship between Borges and the club’s management had been deteriorating since this past summer.
The coach had grown increasingly unhappy with the management’s excessive interference in his plans, specifically their repeated decisions to sell key players without providing sufficient funds to strengthen the squad.
The team’s sluggish start to the season, failing to find their rhythm, further widened the rift, ultimately leading to a complete breakdown in the relationship.
Although Sporting CP recently secured a 2-0 victory over local rivals Casa Pia, it was not enough to salvage the irreparable relationship between the coach and the board.
Separately, Sky Sports' renowned Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, has provided key updates regarding Borges' potential successor.
He reports that, barring any unforeseen developments, Lyon's current head coach Paulo Fonseca is set to return to Portugal to take the helm at Sporting CP.
It is understood that Fonseca has already reached an agreement with Sporting CP regarding personal terms, including salary and performance-based bonuses.
Leões is currently in discussions with Lyon concerning compensation for his release clause. If all goes according to plan, Fonseca is expected to be officially appointed as the new Sporting CP head coach next week.
About Rui Borges
The 45-year-old Borges was born on July 7, 1981, in Mirandela, Portugal. He is 1.73 meters tall. During his playing career, he played as a winger and is a former star player at clubs such as Mirandela and Bragança.
After retiring in 2017, Borges began his coaching career at Mirandela. He went on to manage several lower-division clubs, eventually gaining wider recognition in the summer of 2024 following a brief stint as head coach of Vitória de Guimarães.
In December of the same year, following the departure of then-head coach Rúben Amorim to Manchester United, Borges was appointed as the new Sporting Clube de Portugal head coach.
During his nearly two-year tenure with Leões, Borges oversaw 99 matches across all competitions, recording 64 wins, 22 draws, and 13 losses, with a win percentage of 64.65%. Under his leadership, he helped the club secured one Portuguese Primeira Liga title and one Taça de Portugal.
