The Oklahoma City Thunder have recently been hit by a serious injury crisis. The team officially announced on Friday that star center Chet Holmgren has undergone biological treatment for a minor tear in his right patellar tendon and is expected to be out for 8 to 10 weeks.
Holmgren experienced discomfort in his right knee last week and missed two games. After consulting with specialists and completing treatment, he may not be able to return to the field until December or January, depending on the recovery period.
Besides Holmgren, several other key rotation players for the Thunder have also fallen ill in the past week. Guard Carson Wallace, who had just signed a 5-year, $139 million contract extension, underwent surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season.
Starting guard Jalen Williams suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, has undergone surgery, and is on the long-term sideline. Adding to his woes, key substitute Alex Caruso also sprained his ankle on Monday and is expected to miss several games.
Head coach Mark Degnoter admitted that the team is currently in a difficult situation. With three starters and a key substitute all sidelined due to injury, and despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continuing to lead the team, the squad depth is facing its limit.
Currently, Jared McCain, Kenridge Williams, and rookie Ajay Mitchell have taken over the starting lineup. Mitchell scored 29 points in Wednesday's game against the Dallas Mavericks, becoming one of the few bright spots in the roster crisis.
