The Thunder reassessed their roster improvement plans and abandoned their pursuit of Ochai Abagi.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Saturday, the Oklahoma City Thunder have cancelled their plans to sign Ochai Abagi. After Chet Holmgren was confirmed to be sidelined for at least two months, they decided to reassess their final standard contract slot.

HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto reported on Friday that the Thunder were interested in signing recently waived Abaji. They planned to use him to fill the void left by injuries to Jalen Williams and Carson Wallace, while also strengthening their backcourt and wing depth.

However, Holmgren's sudden injury has shifted the Thunder's focus in terms of roster reinforcements. Due to a minor tear in his right patellar tendon, the player is currently expected to be out for 8 to 10 weeks.

The 26-year-old Abaji is a 6'6" guard who weighs 98kg and can also play forward when necessary. As the 14th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, he has played for the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets throughout his career, appearing in 263 regular season games. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 21.1 minutes per game, with a 44.8% field goal percentage and a 33.9% three-point percentage.

This offseason, Abaji joined the New York Knicks on a training camp contract. However, he only played 29 minutes during the preseason.

After being waived by the Knicks in mid-October, Abagi has become a free agent again. He is still looking for an opportunity to start his fifth NBA season.
