The Portland Trail Blazers officially announced that starting guard Ja Morant is expected to miss at least four weeks due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The team will reassess his injury after four weeks.
The injury occurred Thursday night during the Trail Blazers' home game against the Memphis Grizzlies. This was Morant's first time facing his former team since being traded to the Trail Blazers this summer.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Morant clutched his left hamstring after several possessions, then returned to the bench for examination. He was soon ruled out for the remainder of the game. A post-game MRI confirmed a grade 2 hamstring strain.
Before leaving the court, Morant's shooting touch was off, but he still created a memorable moment: late in the second quarter, after scoring a layup against Grizzlies guard Cedric Cowward, he pointed at his opponent and mouthed provocatively to the audience.
Despite a tied first half, the Grizzlies maintained control in the second half, ultimately securing a 124-103 victory at the Moda Center in Portland, extending their winning streak to five games to start the season. For the Grizzlies, 2026 draft third overall pick Cameron Boozer had a standout performance, recording his first triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.
From entering the league in 2019 until leaving the team this summer, Morant's Grizzlies career was repeatedly hampered by off-court controversies, including a 25-game suspension due to a gun incident and internal disciplinary action after a verbal altercation with his former head coach. This injury has temporarily slowed down the 27-year-old point guard's new journey in Portland.
