Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connally announced Wednesday that the team's star guard Anthony Edwards will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove debris from his right knee and is expected to miss several weeks of games. The team will assess his specific return timeline after the surgery.
Edwards has long been plagued by a right knee injury, playing only 61 regular season games last season, a career low. He started this season in extremely hot form, scoring a franchise-record 133 points in the first four games, even racking up 47 points on Monday while playing with a knee injury.
However, an MRI on Tuesday revealed new damage to Edwards' right knee that had not been detected in previous scans. Connery emphasized that the decision to perform surgery was entirely for the protection of the player's long-term career: "Our primary concern is his long-term health, ensuring he can maintain peak performance in the future. Edwards is somewhat disappointed, but he has a very optimistic personality and encourages his teammates to persevere in the upcoming games."
The Timberwolves' backcourt is currently facing challenges, as last season's starting guard Donte DiVincenzo has been sidelined for an extended period due to a severe Achilles tendon injury. However, with the addition of point guard LaMelo Ball, the team still retains its offensive drive.
During Edwards' absence, Eywyn Dossem or Terrence Shannon II are expected to step into the starting lineup, with backup point guard Brians Hyland also taking on more responsibility. Hyland stated that while no one can truly replace Edwards' role, the team will play as a unit to compensate for the impact of their star player's absence.
