Paris Saint-Germain announced on their official website on Thursday that Georgia international winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has successfully undergone surgery on his right ankle and is fully committed to his upcoming rehabilitation program.
According to the club’s official statement, the procedure was performed in Doha, Qatar, the home country of PSG president and owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi—and the player will remain at the hospital to focus on his recovery.
Furthermore, as reported by prominent French journalist and ESPN contributor Julien Laurens, the injury, a severe tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right ankle, likely means the season is over for the former Napoli star.
Regarding a potential return, Laurens suggests that Kvaratskhelia is not expected to be back on the pitch until late April or mid-May at the earliest.
Given the severity of the injury, and drawing a parallel to the cautious approach taken by Liverpool with players like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and defender Giovanni Leoni, who faced similar issues, PSG is expected to adopt a conservative strategy. They will likely hold Kvaratskhelia out until he is fully recovered, aiming for his return to begin next season.
Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury last Tuesday (October 20) during a Champions League match against Barcelona. In the 59th minute, he was brought down by Barcelona’s young defender Xavi Espart, resulting in the serious injury.
The Georgia international remained on the ground in visible pain before receiving medical attention from the PSG staff. He was eventually helped off the pitch and replaced by Maghnes Akliouche.
As he left the pitch, 19-year-old Désiré Doué, a teammate of Kvaratskhelia, approached him to offer some consolation.
It is worth mentioning that Kvaratskhelia was not the only Paris Saint-Germain player to sustain an injury during the match.
Shortly thereafter, captain Marquinhos was also forced off due to a right-thigh injury, with Illia Zabarnyi coming on as his replacement.
Meanwhile, 2025 Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé suffered a left-thigh injury just 20 minutes into the same match, where he was replaced by former Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.
Despite these significant personnel setbacks, the reigning Ligue 1 champions ultimately secured a 4–2 victory.
The 25-year-old Kvaratskhelia, joined Paris Saint-Germain from Napoli in January 2025 for a staggering €90 million, a move that once again set a record for the highest transfer fee ever paid for a Georgian footballer.
Since joining the Les Parisiens, Kvaratskhelia has made 91 appearances across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 20 assists, where he has won two Ligue 1 titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, two UEFA Super Cups, one Coupe de France, one Trophée des Champions, and one FIFA Club World Cup. He also finished 6th in the voting for the 2026 Ballon d'Or.
