Liverpool defeated Chelsea in a penalty shootout to secure their place in the quarterfinals of this season's English League Cup.
The subsequent quarter-final draw revealed that Liverpool will host Bournemouth at Anfield in December. Facing the prospect of facing his former club, manager Andoni Iraola stated in the post-match press conference that Bournemouth was the team he least wanted to draw.
Speaking about the dramatic draw, Iraola remarked in an interview, "Before the draw, I told people that the only team I didn't want to face was Bournemouth."
“This match was very special for me personally, but they know me very well, and they have been playing very aggressively and in excellent form recently.”
Looking back on this League Cup journey, Iraola lamented the unfavorable draw while also expressing his determination to play at home: "We've never been lucky with draws. We've already played Tottenham and Chelsea in succession, and now we're going to face Bournemouth in the quarterfinals."
"But that's the reality. We have to earn our place in the semi-finals through sheer ability, and I hope we can do that again in front of our home fans at Anfield."
Last season, Liverpool fought their way to the League Cup final and ultimately finished as runners-up. Now, having overcome Chelsea once again, Liverpool will go all out in December, striving to overcome the in-form Bournemouth and advance to the semi-finals.
