Former Elche manager Sarabia has officially taken over as head coach of Espanyol, with his term lasting until 2028.

Espanyol announced on Wednesday the official appointment of 46-year-old Eder Sarabia as their first-team coach. The two sides signed a two-year contract, valid until the end of the 2027/28 season.

According to the official statement, Sarabia will take over the coaching staff along with Jon López, Jon Moreno, and Ettor Unzué. Former Espanyol player Álvaro González, who made 82 appearances for the Parrots between 2014 and 2016, will also join Sarabia's coaching team.

Sarabia comes from a footballing family; his father is Manuel Sarabia, a legendary striker for Athletic Bilbao. He coached youth teams at various levels for Danok Bate and Villarreal in his early career, and later served as an assistant coach under Quique Setién at Las Palmas, Real Betis, and Barcelona.

In January 2021, Sarabia officially began his independent coaching career. He previously served as the head coach of Andorra and Elche, during which time he achieved a record of 91 wins, 55 draws, and 77 losses.

Sarabia had been unemployed since leaving Elche in June. His appointment as manager of Espanyol, replacing Manolo González, marks his return to the helm after a four-month hiatus.

For Sarabia, his main task upon taking office is to lead Espanyol out of the relegation crisis. Espanyol has had a less than ideal start to the season, currently sitting third from bottom in La Liga with a record of 2 wins, 6 draws, and 8 losses, accumulating 8 points.
