Charlotte Hornets' rising star Brandon Miller recently signed a five-year, $209 million maximum contract extension with the team.
This signing not only set a new record for the largest contract in Hornets history, but also surpassed LaMelo Ball's previous five-year, $203 million contract. Following the signing, the 2023 second overall pick publicly expressed his determination to lead the team back to the playoffs.
At the contract extension ceremony held at the Spectrum Center, Miller clearly outlined the team's direction for the new season: "Our goal is the playoffs. We want to be a recognized playoff team, and we want to win as many games as possible. We know our team's position and we know how to reach that level."
The Hornets haven't made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season. Last season, they had a regular season record of 44 wins and 38 losses, but were ultimately eliminated in the play-in tournament.
During this offseason, the Hornets adjusted their roster, trading away LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, and acquiring new players such as Naz Reed, Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neal, and Dennis Schroder.
In an interview, Miller expressed confidence in his new teammates: "I think bringing in these new members, players who have reached the heights we aspire to, will give us an advantage in the long run."
Hornets Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson stated that securing a long-term contract extension with Miller is the team's top priority before the season begins. Peterson admitted, "When he signed, I told him that the real test has just begun, because he has a greater responsibility to become better, to push himself, to inspire his teammates, and to help us fully unleash the team's potential."
