On October 28 local time, Ismail Jacobs officially announced his retirement from the Senegalese national team.
Jacobs, 27, was born in Cologne am Rhine, to parents from Senegal and Germany. He ultimately chose to represent his father’s country and made his senior national team debut on September 24, 2022, in a friendly against Bolivia.
As a left-back, Jacobs has made 33 appearances for Senegal to date. He has also represented the team in two World Cups (2022, 2026) and two Africa Cup of Nations (2024, 2025), with his best result being reaching the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and defeating Morocco.
Now, Jacobs has decided to end his four-year international career. In his farewell statement, he said: "I was a boy when I first joined the national team, and I am a mature man when I leave. I will take with me unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a gratitude that will forever be etched in my heart."
“Although I grew up in Germany, Senegal welcomed me with open arms and love. The country, its fans, my teammates, and the local culture made me feel right at home very quickly.”
“Thanks to Senegal, I was able to realize my childhood dream and experience many moments that I will cherish forever. As the son of a Senegalese, being able to realize both my father’s and my dreams is of great significance to me.”
"Whether it's a friendly match, a qualifying match, the Africa Cup of Nations, or the World Cup, I always give my all for my country. I am proud of the championships we have won, the achievements we have made, and everything we have created together. I feel the same way about every defeat, because I know I have done my best."
"Now it's time to start a new chapter. I hope to focus on my club career and make more precious time for myself and my family. Time is precious, and some moments are gone forever."
"My journey with Senegal on the pitch is coming to an end, but our bond will never fade. Senegal has given me so much, and I hope to give back in the future, even off the pitch."
"Senegal, you gave me the opportunity to realize my dream. I will always be grateful for that. Thank you for everything you have given me."
After leaving the national team, Jacobs will shift his focus to the club level. He will play for Galatasaray from July 2025, making 74 appearances to date and winning two Turkish Super League titles and one Turkish Cup with the team.
