The Dallas Mavericks announced Wednesday that they have officially signed Walter Clayton Jr., who was recently waived. The news was first reported by NBA insider Marc Stein and subsequently confirmed by the Mavericks.
Since being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies last week, Clayton Jr.'s name has been linked with teams such as the Sacramento Kings and the Miami Heat. However, he ultimately chose to sign a one-year two-way contract with the Mavericks.
Multiple sources indicate that the Grizzlies will cover Clayton's guaranteed salary of $4.2 million for the 2026/27 season.
The 23-year-old Clayton Jr. is a 6'6" combo guard weighing 88kg. He will enter the NBA in July 2025 as the 18th overall pick in the first round. In his rookie season, he played for the Utah Jazz, appearing in 45 regular season games, averaging 6.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 18.0 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 39.8% and a three-point percentage of 30.8%.
In February of this year, Clayton Jr. was traded from the Jazz to the Grizzlies as part of the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade. He then played 24 regular season games for the Grizzlies, averaging 9.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 25.0 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 36.6% and a three-point percentage of 30.7%.
According to the official announcement, Clayton Jr. will wear jersey number 1 for the Mavericks. His arrival also means that the Mavericks' two-way contract roster is now full, with the remaining two players being Jett Howard and Toby LaVar.
