Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha confirmed that contract extension talks with the club are

The Liverpool ECHO reported on Monday that Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha confirmed, following the match against Brentford last weekend, that contract extension talks with the club are "moving in a positive direction."

According to the report, Ngumoha said that he has entrusted the contract negotiations entirely to his representation team, while he remains focused on continuing his hard work to help the team achieve the best possible results.

Ngumoha said that: "Everything (regarding contract extension talks) is now in the hands of my agent. I believe things are progressing well, though I can’t say for sure."

"I just focus on letting my performances on the pitch do the talking. I truly enjoy playing the game, so I don’t dwell too much on those other matters. My current task is to play for Liverpool, and I hope to keep performing at a high level."

When asked whether his preference for a specific position has shifted, given that he has frequently been deployed on the right wing this season, despite primarily playing as a left winger, Ngumoha replied: "Not anymore. I’m gradually adapting to the right wing, and I’ve actually come to quite like it."

"Since the match against Newcastle United, I feel my performance on the right has improved significantly. My understanding of the game has also deepened."

"Being called up to the England national team training camps has been a huge help, too. I’m now comfortable playing on either the left or the right, which adds more variety to my attacking game, it feels great."

Finally, when asked if he was concerned about the intense competition for places, Ngumoha responded modestly: "I think the club is just trying to protect me, given my age. Besides, we have some of the best forwards in the world in our squad, so earning playing time is never easy."

"It’s really just healthy competition. At the end of the day, our collective goal is to help the team win. Regardless of how much playing time we get, there’s no room for resentment, we should simply give our all and showcase what we can do."

Ngumoha signed his first professional contract with Liverpool last August. However, due to regulations set by the English Football Association and UK child labor laws, the initial professional contract for any player who is a minor at the time of signing is capped at a maximum duration of three years, meaning Ngumoha’s long-term future at the club remains uncertain.

Given the persistent reports that Bayern Munich has been prepared to offer as much as £100 million to lure Rio Ngumoha away, it is imperative for the Reds to secure a contract extension with this rising star as soon as possible, thereby safeguarding a vital asset for the club's future.

About Rio Ngumoha

Ngumoha, who is only still 18 years old, was born in London, England, on July 21, 2008. He primarily plays as a left winger, but can also play as a right winger or as a center-forward. He holds citizenship in England, Nigeria, and France.

Ngumoha joined Chelsea’s youth academy at a young age and began representing the club’s U18s team in the summer of 2023.

In September 2024, Ngumoha moved to Liverpool, with a youth development compensation fee of £1 million paid to Chelsea.

It is understood that he chose to join the Reds because of Liverpool’s proven track record in recent years of nurturing young talent and providing a clear pathway from the academy to the first-team.

Chelsea, clearly unhappy with Ngumoha’s departure to Liverpool, went as far as barring scouts from rival clubs from attending their matches, an action that earned them a warning from the English Football Association (FA).

During the 2025/26 season, he drew widespread acclaim after coming off the bench in an away match against Newcastle United to score a stoppage-time winner. He also netted the opening goal in a match against Fulham.

Since joining the Reds, Ngumoha has so far made 38 appearances across all competitions for the Premier League giants, scoring two goals and providing one assist, where has set several club records, becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever player to feature in the FA Cup and in European competition, as well as the youngest goalscorer in the club's history.
