Liverpool secured a dramatic 4-3 narrow comeback victory over Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday on matchday 3 of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase.

Early in the first half, a misjudged headed clearance by Van Dijk inside his own penalty area gifted an opportunity to the opposition, Cardona then volleyed and scored with a clinical strike. The "Reds" then launched a spirited fightback, with Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araújo both finding the net with headers. In the second half, Mac Allister added another goal with a close-range strike, followed shortly by a goal from Florian Wirtz. At a crucial juncture, Oluwaseyi stepped up to score. In the end, Liverpool sealed a sealing a narrow 4-3 comeback win against Villarreal. Following this result, their third consecutive win across all competitions, the Reds sit second on the table with 9 points, while El Submarillo Amarillo remain in 19th place with 3 points.

First Half

In the 4th minute, Villarreal launched a deadly quick counter-attack. A botched headed clearance by Virgil van Dijk inside his own box allowed Georges Mikautadze, who successfully beaten the offside trap and intercepted the ball before volleying the ball into the bottom right corner of the empty net with his right foot from the left side of the box. Villarreal broke the deadlock first to take an early 1-0 lead!

In the 23rd minute, Trey Nyoni delivered a cross from the left side of the penalty area. Ryan Gravenberch, arriving quickly in the center, met the ball with a right-footed strike, but his effort was gathered by Péter Gulácsi. 

6 minutes later, Nathan Saliba played a through ball from the front. After successfully beating the offside trap, Sergi Cardona quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying the ball into the bottom left corner of the empty net against the outrushing Alisson with his left foot. Villarreal extended their lead to 0–2! This is Cardona’s first goal in European competition!

In the 36th minute, Liverpool earned a deadly corner kick opportunity. Kostas Tsimikas took the corner by crossing it into the box, where Alexis Mac Allister rose high and scored with a header in the box, pulling one back for Liverpool to make it 1–2! With this goal, Mac Allister has now scored 7 headers in European competition, the third-highest tally among current Liverpool players, trailing only captain Virgil van Dijk (15 goals) and Cody Gakpo (8 goals)!

3 minutes later, Nyoni passes horizontally from the left wing. Mac Allister quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before taking a right-footed long-shot from outside the box, but his shot went just slightly wide of the bottom left corner of the post.

In the 40th minute, Tajon Buchanan passes horizontally from the right wing. Santiago Mouriño followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before taking a right-footed long shot from just outside of the penalty area, but his shot was parried away by Alisson with a diving save.

4 minutes later, Tsimikas played a straight pass from the left wing. Cody Gakpo quickly followed up, got the ball, dribbled and, cuts into the left side of the box before volleying with his left footed from a difficult angle, but his shot was saved by Gulácsi. 

In the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Rio Ngumoha crossed into the box from the left wing. The unmarked Ronald Araújo quickly followed up before scoring with a header at a very close distance of the box with ease—bringing Liverpool level at 2-2 against Villarreal! With this assist,  the18-year-old (and 52-day-old) wonderkid Ngumoha set a new record, becoming Liverpool’s youngest player to provide an assist in a European competition since Michael Owen (18 years, 324 days)!

The first half concluded with Liverpool and Villarreal heading into the break temporarily tied at 2-2.

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 48th minute, Ngumoha crossed from the right side of the box the box. Ryan Gravenberch quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying with his right foot from a very close distance in the center of the box at a difficult angle, but his shot was saved by Gulácsi.

5 minutes later, Alexis Mac Allister played a cutback from the left side of the box to Gakpo, who after stopping the ball, took a right-footed long shot from just outside of the penalty area. His shot was held onto by Gulácsi.

In the 57th minute, Kostas Tsimikas played a straight pass from the left wing. Florian Wirtz quickly followed up, got the ball, dribbled and cuts into the left side of the box before volleying with his right foot from a difficult angle, but his shot that was saved by Gulácsi.

4 minutes later, Gakpo passes horizontally from the left wing. Trey Nyoni quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, took a right-footed long shot from just outside of the penalty area, but his shot just went narrowly wide of the bottom right corner of the post.

In the 65th minute, Ngumoha passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Mac Allister quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed the ball with his right foot from a very close distance in the box. His shot struck the underside of the crossbar before deflecting into the lower center of the net, scoring his second goal of the match! Liverpool turn the score around by leading Villarreal 3-2!

3 minutes later, Liverpool launched a deadly quick counterattack. Gakpo passes horizontally from the left wing, Wirtz quickly followed up and got the ball before volleying the ball into the bottom right corner of the net from the left side of the box with his left foot. Liverpool extended their lead to 4-2!

In the 87th minute, Ayoze Pérez crossed from the byline at the right side of the box. Tani Oluwaseyi quickly follwed up amd upon receiving the pass, strucked the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with a left-footed shot from the center of the box. Villarreal pulled one back to make it 4-3, but it was too little, too late!

When the final whistle is blown, Liverpool secured a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Villarreal.
