Sky Sports' resident renowned Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano exclusively reported via his official YouTube channel on Thursday that Michael Carrick's position as Manchester United manager has become increasingly precarious.
According to Romano, following the club’s 1–4 defeat in the Champions League, discontent has grown within the squad regarding Carrick’s tactical approach, a sentiment echoed by captain Bruno Fernandes, who openly criticized the manager after the match.
While some players, such as Lisandro Martínez, have directed their frustration toward the club’s management and technical staff, others are dissatisfied with both the leadership and the coaching setup.
Manchester United’s management, which prioritizes results above all else, has grown concerned over the team’s seven-match winless streak, leading them to question Michael Carrick’s capabilities.
Although Carrick is expected to remain in charge for this Sunday’s match against Bournemouth, his situation is dire. Should the Red Devils' poor form persist, it could well prove to be the final straw.
Romano further revealed that, prior to Carrick’s permanent appointment as manager this summer, Manchester United had considered hiring Cesc Fàbregas, the current manager of Como.
However, the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea legend declined the opportunity, as he was unwilling to abandon the project he has built at Como. Currently present, Fàbregas remains uninterested in any offers to manage elsewhere.
Another candidate previously under consideration was Julian Nagelsmann, the former head coach of the Germany national team. However, as he was committed to leading Die Mannschaft through their 2026 World Cup campaign, no formal discussions could take place.
Furthermore, Romano has clarified reports circulating online regarding other potential candidates for the Manchester United managerial position.
He noted that while some online outlets have suggested Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni as a possible successor, he understands that Scaloni is nearing a contract extension with the Argentine Football Association, which would keep him at the helm of La Albiceleste through at least the 2030 World Cup.
Within the Manchester United hierarchy, there are individuals who hold Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler’s abilities in high regard, but that is the extent of it.
The situation regarding former Bournemouth and Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is similar to that of Hürzeler.
As for Antonio Conte, despite rumours in Italy suggesting he might be open to joining Manchester United, no contact has ever taken place between the two parties.
Finally, Romano pointed out that Manchester United finds itself in a state of disarray, with factions split between supporting Carrick, backing the current management, or siding with neither.
Ultimately, the club must carefully decide whether to continue standing by its manager or to heed the calls of Martinez and his allies to remove underperforming members of the management team.
What is certain, however, is that even if the Premier League giants publicly maintain their support for Carrick, a continued lack of improvement in results could still lead to his sacking, much like the departures of Erik ten Hag and Rúben Amorim.
