Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 at home in the Premier League, with 19-year-old Brazilian star Esteban Willian making his first league start of the season and delivering a stunning performance.
In a post-match interview, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso focused on reviewing his personnel choices for Esterwyn and highly praised the young player's performance on the field.
Alonso revealed that starting Esteban was not a last-minute decision before the match, but a strategy finalized at the beginning of the week: "We talked after the game against Tottenham, and he already knew he would be playing today. You guys often ask me for information, but sometimes I have to keep some details to myself."
Facing the heavy responsibility of starting, Esteban completed 6 shots and created 3 excellent scoring opportunities. Although two of his goals were disallowed due to offside and VAR decisions, his outstanding performance earned him a standing ovation from the entire stadium.
Alonso gave it high praise: "He gave the best response, proving that he was fully prepared and deserved more playing time, which is exactly what the coaching staff expects of the players. We are sincerely happy for him."
Speaking about Esteban's commitment and tactical value throughout the match, Alonso added: "He deserved to enjoy the game. He connected very well with the fans and came very close to scoring. He gave his all throughout the match, and although he was exhausted by the end, it was definitely a wonderful day for him."
“I was pretty sure he could create a lot of impact today, and he did. He was a threat, created many scoring opportunities, and showed his full potential.”
