According to a report by HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto on Friday, the Oklahoma City Thunder plan to sign free agent Ochai Abaji.
Abagi signed a training camp contract with the New York Knicks this summer but became a free agent after being waived in mid-October. His signing with the Thunder will occupy the last standard contract slot and mark his fifth NBA season.
As for the specific details of the contract, there is no confirmed information at present. However, before completing this signing, the Thunder still have $6.9 million in salary cap space below the second-highest salary cap level.
Abaji, 26, is a 6'6" (1.96m) and 98kg (4.95kg) guard who entered the NBA in 2022 as the 14th overall pick in the first round. Throughout his career, he has played for the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets, appearing in 263 regular season games. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 21.1 minutes per game, with a 44.8% field goal percentage and a 33.9% three-point percentage.
For the Thunder, Abaji's arrival is a timely boon. With Jalen Williams and Carson Wallace both sidelined with injuries, he is expected to become an important addition to the Thunder's backcourt rotation.
